Founded in 1934 on West Third Street in Williamsport, Pa. as a full service vehicle garage by Carl Hunter & Evrod (Ev) Lomison, Hunter & Lomison moved to its present location at 1956 West Fourth Street in June of 1944. Hunter & Lomison acquired the service distributorships for Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, and Tecumseh Engines in the early 1950’s. Carl Hunter travelled to towns in Lycoming and surrounding counties to sign up small garages and gas stations as small engine dealers.
After the passing of Carl in 1959, his widow and Ev Lomison sold Hunter & Lomison to John Kelly, who expanded the scope of specialist services offered by the company (such as speedometer rebuilding, wheel alignment, and dynamometer testing) to include auto electric. John Kelly’s son, Jim, began working at Hunter & Lomison in 1961, at age 5, sweeping the floors and other odds and ends. By age 7, Jim was rebuilding automotive starters and generators and performing other auto electric repairs.
In 1980, the property adjacent to the west of Hunter & Lomison was purchased and used to expand the place of business by building a garage that could accommodate very large vehicles or equipment.
As the years passed, the small engine distributorship and repair end thrived and many of the automobile related services were gradually dropped. Jim Kelly, still working for the business, decided to concentrate on generators and worked relentlessly to build the generator end of the business. In 1985, Hunter & Lomison became a Generac Distributor. In 1995, Hunter & Lomison became a Generac Parts Warehouse and was the first warehouse to sell over 1 million dollars in parts in a single year.
Jim Kelly became the proprietor of Hunter & Lomison in 2000 and soon after, the last vestige of automotive related service, auto electrics, was discontinued.
Our core business is generator and generator parts sales and service. We maintain an inventory of Generac generators and transfer switches and have a warehouse full of parts for Generac, Kohler, and Onan generators and transfer switches. Our technicians are factory trained and we offer emergency service 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Hunter & Lomison’s business philosophy is based on just a few points of commitment.
A tremendous amount of time and energy is invested getting to know our customers and ensuring that they are satisfied with every aspect of every transaction (whether it is the purchasing of a large industrial genset, or a simple inquiry about how to check the oil on a Generac Home Standby, or a search for the correct part for a pressure washer, or whatever else one can think of). We talk with our customers who wish to purchase a generator to make sure that they are getting the unit that they need, that the placement will be correct, the fuel supply will be sufficient, the transfer switch will be proportionate to their needs, and so that they know exactly what to expect from their new system and from Hunter & Lomison after the sale regarding support, service, etc. We often place follow up calls after a repair is performed on a generator to verify that the system is working as it should. Despite the large size of our customer base, we usually recognize the voice when a customer calls and we can greet him or her on a friendly, familiar basis. We believe that maintaining this type of relationship with our customers is beneficial to them, to the individual staff members of the company, and to the organization as a whole.

A few years ago when the fracking boom was going at full tilt in the local and surrounding areas, a gentleman that was from out of state but was sent here by a gas company was in our establishment talking with the owner, Jim Kelly. He asked about weekend hours and when informed that we are closed Saturdays and Sundays he said, “Y’all don’t believe in working the weekends around here, do you?” Jim Kelly said that we were always available for emergencies on the weekends but we believed that it was important to spend time with our families, as well. That is a fine example of the philosophy at work which creates the environment essential to staff retention and the high level of customer service offered by Hunter & Lomison. Some larger companies may operate in such a way that the employees don’t even feel recognized as human beings; how many people are motivated to go the extra mile in customer service while working in such an environment?
